CV Maarten van der Valk

 

Born in Johannesburg (South Africa) in 1950 to Dutch parents; at age eleven moved to Holland with
family. Played piano and trumpet and took up drums at age twelve. His father was a prominent jazz
drummer during the late 30’s/early 40’s; his brother is a professional blues and rock drummer.

1969 Entered the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music to study timpani and percussion
with Mr. Jan Labordus, former 1st solo timpanist with the Royal Concertgebouw
Orchestra in Amsterdam.


1972 Freelancing with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra,
the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brabant Orchestra (Eindhoven)
and the North-Holland Philharmonic Orchestra (Haarlem).


1973 Graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. In 1975 he obtained
his Master’s Teaching Degree at the same Conservatory.


1974 After audition becomes timpanist/percussionist with the Amsterdam Philharmonic
Orchestra under Anton Kersjes.
Also freelance work (timpani, percussion and drum kit) with all
major Dutch orchestras and Ensembles, such as Amsterdam Nonet,
including the Dutch Radio Orchestras, ensembles and studio work.

1980 Becomes freelancer with orchestras and ensembles as before.
Records albums with funk/rock band 'Bruno Basta' and latin band Nico v/d Linden Trio,
with whom he tours the Carribean in February 1981. Makes a 4 month study trip to LA (PIT)
and New York (Mel Lewis), researching combination of Jazz and Classical music in teaching,
sponsored by the Dutch Culture Ministery


1984 Becomes timpanist (and today still is) with the
“Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century”, founded in 1981 by Frans Brüggen.
This international orchestra tours throughout the world approximately three to four
times a year and has recorded over 70 CD’s


1985 Also acting principal timpani and percussion with the Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra
in Hilversum / Holland, under Ernest Bour and Hans Zender.
First solo appearance with the orchestra at the Alicante Contemporary Music
Festival in August 1987


1987 In September moves to Iceland with family and obtains timpani position with the Icelandic
Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavík under chef Petri Sakari.
Solo appearance with the orchestra in 1993.
Becomes coach of timpani and percussion with the Icelandic Youth Orchestra under chef
Paul Zukovsky


1988 Besides timpanist with the ISO and the “Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century” under
Frans Brüggen appears at the Montreal Jazz Festival with Icelandic jazz fusiongroup Súld.
Becomes percussion teacher at the FÍH Musicschool in Reykjavik.
Concerts and recordings with Kammersveit Reykjavikur.

1991 Moves back to Holland with family and besides continuing the
“Orchestra of the 18th Century”, builds up further freelance practise


1993 Invited to play timpani with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
Solo appearance with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavik.
Set up of new Icelandic chamber group “Ymir”. Cd recording and concerts in
Iceland, Holland, Belgium and Japan.


1994 Freelancing with all major Dutch Orchestras, such as Rotterdam Philharmonic
Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Dutch Radio Orchestras (also Metropole
Radio Bigband) and appearance with the Nederlandse Bachvereniging under Jos van
Veldhoven.


1995 After audition becomes timpanist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra
under Valery Gergjev. Also continuing concert touring with the “Orchestra of the
Eighteenth Century” under Frans Brüggen.


1997 First appearance concerts and recordings with the Combattimento
Consort Amsterdam under Jan Willem de Vriend.
In 2000 solo appearance with the ensemble.
Appearances with the Orquestra de Cambra del Lliure of Barcelona, under
Josep Pons.
Continuing of concert tours/recordings with the “Orchestra of the EighteenthCentury”.


1999 Invited as “Solista Invitat” to play timpani periodically with the
Orquestra de Barcelona y Nacional de Catalunya under Lawrence Foster
during the season 1999/2000.

-In October release of his solo album “Touch”

 

 2000-2001 Concert touring with the “Orchestra of the 18th Century”, the
Freiburger Barockorchester and the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam
With this ensemble first appearance as a recording producer of multichannel cd
“Exeptional Masterpieces” as well as solo appearance on that cd. (work by J.S
Endler- 1756)
Editing of other cd’s of the same ensemble.
Further freelancing with orchestras and ensembles in Germany, Belgium, Spain,
Japan and the Netherlands, such as Bach Collegium Japan under Masaaki Suzuki,
Balthasar Neumann Ensemble under Thomas Hengelbrock and
Orchestra de Barcelona y Nacional de Catalunya under Lawrence Foster.
-In October joins the “Blueline Bigband” from Zeist/Holland as a drummer.


2002 Concerts/touring as before.
Masterclass at the Tokio National University of Fine Arts and Music in November.
First appearance at the International Chambermusic Festival of Schiermonnikoog (Holland).

-Releases own line of “MaruTen” Baroque Timpani sticks.


2003 Concerts/touring and recordings as before; in October and December with
the Freiburger Barockorchester and Cecilia Bartoli. Concert tour and recording
with the Nederlandse Bachvereniging.
Masterclass at the Music Conservatory Department of the
Hogeschool van de Kunsten Arnhem / Holland.


2004 Concerts/touring with “Orchestra of the 18th Century” as before.
Concert tour with Camerata Salzburg and Murray Perehia.
Other appearances with Orchestra Libera Classica/Japan and
Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra, Combattimento Consort Amsterdam,
Balthasar Neumann Ensemble a.o.
End of year new serie concerts with Cecilia Bartoli and the Freiburger Barockorchester
Second appearance at the International Chambermusic Festival of
Schiermonnikoog (Holland) in October.
CD recordings in Germany, Holland and Japan.
Invited for Masterclass at the HongKong Art Academy in 2005.

In August moves to Copenhagen/Denmark with his wife. In November joins the
Rudesdale Bigband from Søllerød, as a drummer.


2007 First appearance in January with the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra,
followed by appearances in March, June and invitations for future projects.
Further more as before, concerts, tours as well as recordings with the “Orchestra of
the Eighteenth Century”, the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam,
Orchestra Libera Classica/Japan, the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, Les
Agrémens/Namur, Bach Collegium Japan, Concerto Köln, a.o. several
invitations to play timpani with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in the future.
Taking part at the 35th Acacdemic Conference -‘Percussion instruments in the music of
the 16th to the mid 19th century’-, at ‘Kloster Michaelstein’, as solo performer, teacher
and giving a lecture. (at the St. Michaelstein Monestary in Blankenburg-Harz/
Germany)
First appearance in Copenhagen as a Baroque player (december) with the Leipziger
Kammerorchester, Sokkelund Sangkor and soloists under Prof. Morten Schuldt-
Jensen.


2008 Invited and performed the January New Years concerts at the Toppan Hall in Tokyo,
with ad-hoc Japanese chamber orchestra (‘1st players’ from different Japanese and European
orchestras), under conductor Hidemi Suzuki.
