On 1 November 2024, four friends met again after a long time at Café In de Waag in Amsterdam. Trumpeter Jonathan Impett, drummer/percussionist Maarten van der Valk, pianist and guitarist Bob Helsloot, and bassist Wilbert de Gooijer had travelled to Amsterdam to receive the first copies of their album Intuition, improvised music.

The recording of this album dates back to 7 May 1986, when five musicians—with vastly different musical backgrounds—gathered in the studio of music theatre collective Orkater in Amsterdam for a session. A daring venture. They arrived without any repertoire, agreeing only to grant each other one bar at a time once the tape rolled.

Thirty-eight years later, joyfully reunited in the Amsterdam café, they first reflected at length on the sad loss of one of the quintet’s members. Saxophonist Peter Massink had passed away in 2014. Despite the keen awareness of how deeply Peter would be missed, the idea quickly took shape to meet once more in a studio following the very same approach.

On 22 May 2025, that meeting took place at Studio Van Schuppen in Veenendaal. Led by sound director Jochem Geene and in the presence of filmmaker and friend Maarten Treurniet, the recording session began. They spent the entire day improvising, once again without a single note written on paper. Guest artist was saxophonist Raaf Hekkema of the Calefax Reed Quintet. Raaf, son of legendary jazz trumpeter Evert Hekkema, made a personal contribution with his arrangement of his father’s composition Simplex.

And so, nearly four decades after the first recording, the foundation for this album was laid once again in just a single day. We chose to frame twelve improvisations with two recordings featuring Peter Massink that were unearthed from the archives. Intuition, the reunion is therefore both the result of a joyful reunion and an introduction to Raaf Hekkema, but above all, it has become an in memoriam and tribute to Peter: a great musician and a dear friend from the very beginning.

The CD 'Exceptional masterpieces' (2001) was a project in coöperation with Combattimento
Consort Amsterdam. Maarten contributed as a soloist in one of the pieces (a work with five timpani
by J.S. Endler) as well as the Recording Producer, responsible for the whole production.
In 2009 Maarten was Recording Supervisor for an album of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth
Century, an album released by Glossa with works for Horn (Teunis van der Zwart) and Orchestra by
W.A. Mozart.
In 2012 Maarten has participated in the final editing of a new CD-box of the
Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century under Frans Brüggen with all the nine ‘live’ recorded
Beethoven symphonies. (October 2011) Released by Glossa.
